Nevada mustangs with lots of interesting white facial and leg markings, (and Overo and Sabino white body patterns.)
Facial swirls found on forehead between, slightly above or below eyes have been used for accurate personality and behavioral analysis. This "three swirler" is a complicated character!

Leg markings correspond to areas of the leg which are covered by white. From left to right, lowest "socks" to highest "stockings":

a.CORONET, b. PASTERN, c. HIGH FETLOCK, d. THREE-QUARTER STOCKING, e. STOCKING OVER THE KNEE , f. STOCKING OVER THE HOCK, g. EXTENSIVE STOCKING


"White Lacing" Rare white pattern usually developing at one year of age. May be related to a vaccine reaction or a skin disease in some horses, but also occurs without any cause in some horses. Appears to be limited to certain bloodlines only. "

WHITE FACIAL MARKINGS:

Between the eyes: a. STAR.   Top of nasal bones: b. STRIP.   Above upper lip: c. SNIP.   On lower lip: d. CHIN SPOT,  and Narrow connected Star, Strip and Snip: d. STRIPE.   Stripe that goes off to one side: e. RACE.   Wide stripe: f. BLAZE.   Wide blaze that covers nostrils or muzzle: g. BALDFACE.    Baldface with white down the bottom of the jaw to the throat, leaving color over eyes and ears:  h. APRONFACE.    Entirely white head except for eyes and ears: BONNET (not shown)

"Ermine spots" are dark spots on white markings. They often correspond to stripes on hooves. "Ink spots" or "pawprints" are dark spots on white patches on Tobiano pintos. Rocky's white marking has a "halo" (also called "ghost" or "shadow".) Equine Color Genetics defines this as "pigmented skin extending into the white spot."
